Structured cabling is the part nobody notices until it fails

Network cabling is the longest-lived component in your technology stack. Switches get replaced every five to seven years, laptops every three, phone systems whenever the contract changes — but the cable in the ceiling stays for fifteen or twenty years. That makes it the one part of the infrastructure worth over-specifying, and the one part where cutting corners is felt for the longest time. Intermittent drops, negotiation failures at gigabit, PoE devices that reboot under load, and cameras that fall off the network on hot afternoons are almost always cabling problems being blamed on equipment.

Doing it properly is a discipline, not a product. Certified installation means correct cable selection for the environment, maintaining bend radius and pull tension, keeping separation from electrical distribution and fluorescent ballasts, respecting the maximum channel length, terminating consistently to one standard throughout, supporting cable independently of ceiling grid and pipework, and using plenum-rated or riser-rated cable where the building requires it. Each of those has a measurable effect on the certification results, and results are what we hand over at the end.

Power over Ethernet has changed the requirements substantially. Wireless access points, IP cameras, door controllers, digital signage and desk phones now draw significant power through the same cable that carries their data. Higher PoE classes generate heat inside bundled cable, which raises insertion loss and can push a marginal run out of specification. We plan bundle sizes, cable category and pathway fill with PoE loading in mind rather than treating every drop as a data-only run.

The other half of the job is documentation. Every outlet is labelled at both ends to a consistent scheme, every run is tested and certified with the results supplied to you, the rack is dressed so patch changes take seconds instead of an afternoon, and a port schedule maps each faceplate to its patch panel position. That documentation is what makes every future move, add and change cheap — and it is exactly what is missing in most buildings we are called into.

Comprehensive scope of work

Cabling projects are quoted per drop and per pathway, with the rack build and certification listed separately. A full scope typically includes:

  • Site survey covering floor plans, pathway routes, existing infrastructure, distances and equipment room location

Data Cabling & Networking: frequently asked questions

How much does structured cabling cost per drop?

Cost per drop depends on cable category, run length, pathway difficulty, ceiling type and whether core drilling or firestopping is required. An open-ceiling office with accessible pathways is far less expensive per drop than a finished heritage building requiring wall fishing. We quote per drop after a site survey so the number reflects your building rather than an average.

Should we install Cat6 or Cat6A?

Cat6 handles gigabit comfortably and 10 gigabit over shorter channels, and remains appropriate for most standard office workstations. Cat6A is the better choice for wireless access point drops, high-power PoE devices, longer runs and any location you expect to carry 10 gigabit for the life of the cable. Because labour dominates the cost, upgrading the cable specification is usually a small premium on the total.

Do you certify and document the cabling?

Yes. Every copper run is tested with a calibrated certification tester against the category standard, and fibre is loss-tested or OTDR-tested. You receive the full results file, a port schedule mapping every faceplate to its patch panel position, a rack elevation and as-built pathway drawings.

Can the work be done while we are operating?

Yes. Cable pulling and termination are typically done during business hours in unoccupied zones, and disruptive activities such as core drilling, ceiling work above desks and network cut-over are scheduled after hours or on a weekend. Cut-over is planned with your IT provider so downtime is defined and brief.

Will you coordinate with our IT company?

Routinely, and it produces a better result. We build to their equipment specification, agree the rack layout and labelling scheme with them in advance, coordinate cut-over timing, and hand over a documented rack. They keep ownership of the network; we deliver the physical layer it runs on.

Can you power the equipment room as well as cable it?

Yes. Because we are a licensed electrical contractor, we install the dedicated circuits, rack PDUs, UPS connections, grounding and cooling-equipment power alongside the cabling, all under one quote, one schedule and one ESA notification.
