How the setup changes by house and situation

Century homes downtown and in Sydenham Ward

These houses usually have limited panel capacity and sometimes a mess of sub-panels added over the decades. Before we talk generator size, we look hard at the existing panel and wiring condition — in some cases a panel upgrade needs to happen first so the transfer switch has something solid to land on. Yard space for a pad is often tighter too, so propane tank and generator placement takes more planning around property lines and window clearances.

1960s-70s bungalows in Calvin Park and similar neighbourhoods

These are usually straightforward jobs. Panels are typically 100 or 200 amp and in reasonable shape, and there's normally enough side or backyard space for a proper pad. Essential-circuit setups covering furnace, sump pump, fridge, and some lighting circuits are the most common request here rather than whole-home coverage.

Newer builds in Westbrook and Woodhaven

Newer homes have modern 200 amp panels and often central air and electric everything, which changes the math on load calculation. Whole-home standby is more realistic here because the panel and service can usually support it, but it also means a bigger generator and a bigger conversation about propane tank size versus natural gas hookup.

Rural Frontenac and Lennox and Addington properties

Well pumps change the priority list completely — no power means no water, not just no lights. Do I need a whole-home generator, or is essential-circuits enough?

Most homeowners are well served by an essential-circuits setup covering heat, the sump pump, the fridge, and some lighting. Whole-home makes more sense if you've got things like a well pump, medical equipment, or central air that you don't want to live without during a multi-day outage. We'll walk through your panel and your priorities before recommending either.

Natural gas or propane — which is better?

If natural gas is already run to your house, it's usually the simpler and lower-hassle option since there's no tank to monitor or refill. If you're on propane or don't have gas service, a propane tank sized to your generator's run time works fine — it just means coordinating tank size and placement with your fuel supplier.

Can I just use a portable generator instead?

Yes, plenty of people do, and we can install a proper inlet box and interlock kit or manual transfer switch so you're not running extension cords through a window or, worse, backfeeding the panel through a dryer outlet. It's a much smaller upfront cost than automatic standby, with the trade-off that you have to be home to start it and switch it over.

How long does installation take?

How much maintenance does a standby generator need?
